About Us. Main Street America has been helping revitalize older and historic commercial districts for 40 years. Today it is a network of more than 1, neighborhoods and communities, rural and urban, who share both a commitment to place and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. Historic preservation is largely an urban profession with strong ties to city planning and development. Advocates tout preservation as a key driver of urban revitalization, but there remains a dearth of empirical research that addresses this intersection.

The statewide historic preservation plan identifies short and long-term goals for the preservation of Maine's cultural resources. These goals are intentionally broad to provide guidance on a variety of cultural and historic resource issues not only for the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, but also for other organizations and individuals carrying out historic preservation work in the state.

Currently, our office is working to update the State Historic Preservation Plan for the next five years, To gather data for the next edition, the Commission is sponsoring an online questionnaire to collect information from the many people, organizations, municipalities, and agencies that comprise Maine's preservation community.

In Maine, protection for historic properties is articulated in laws and regulations, administered by towns and municipalities, and implemented through preservation agreements and easements. Protection of historic resources is also pro-actively encouraged through thoughtful and informed planning at all levels.

1 The Planning Process | 2 Preservation Strategies. Even in the smallest institutions, a preservation program needs administrative coordination in order to be effective.

In the absence of an overall plan, individual preservation projects may neglect certain needs, or duplicate efforts by different departments. The Northeast Document Conservation Center's workbook Preservation Planning: Guidelines for Writing a Long-Range Plan is intended to assist institutions that have completed needs assessments in drafting a long-range planning document.

The Association of Research Libraries offers a Preservation Planning Program that, although targeted at large. Some additional committees and boards also live-stream their meetings. Check the Town Hall Streams page for the full schedule. Watch the Broadcast on Portland Media Center’s TV Channel Archived Meetings (for meetings prior to November 1, ) It is recommended that people choose to download the PDF or packet option for Archived Meetings.

A plan is vital in helping to design a new building in a heritage setting. Often complex sites will already have plans, but they might only relate to one type of heritage -for example a countryside or collections management plan, a conservation.

area appraisals or a garden restoration plan. A single conservation management plans. and refined the incident action planning process as a way to plan and execute operations on any incident. Incident action planning is more than producing an IAP.

It is a set of activities, repeated each operational period, that provides a consistent rhythm and structure to incident management. Some planning commissions seem to assume the preceding factors will manage themselves or can be dealt with as problems arise.

This logic is faulty and potentially fatal to the planning process. Solid comprehensive planning begins with the end in mind.

This is why having a plan for planning is so essential. Environmental Planning and Historic Preservation The integrity of our natural and historic landscape is important to us all, and steps taken to strengthen or rebuild communities can have long-term environmental and cultural impacts.

It is the Commission's goal, through the project review process, to protect historic properties in the State of Maine while striking a balance between the public interest in historic preservation and governmental, commercial and private interests in various initiatives.

Title A, Chapter PLANNING AND LAND USE REGULATION. Subchapter 1: GENERAL PROVISIONS. Article 3-B: COMMUNITY PRESERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE. Maine Data for this page extracted on 12/05/ The Long-Range Preservation Plan. The result of the planning process is the formulation of a written, long-range preservation plan.

This is an important document for an institution to have. A long-range preservation plan delineates an institution's preservation needs and charts a course of action to meet these needs for its collections.

Planning is about preserving and enhancing what makes Portland great. In the Planning Division, we work with a variety of stakeholders to develop plans and policies to help Portland thrive. In Planning, we conduct development review to ensure that developments meet City standards, as well as work on long range plans that help inform those.

Influenced by Modernism, the younger generation of architects dismissed buildings of the late Victorian period as the fanciful ornament known as “gingerbread”.
